Sonography

Sonography is a diagnostic medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate pathology in the interested organs.
Sonography is useful for evaluating the size, shape, and density of tissues to help diagnose certain medical conditions like in abdomen study, it helps to find out kidney or gall bladder stones, acute appendicitis or malignancy in the various intra-abdominal organs.
In obstetrics and gynecology, sonography plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of various diseases in females like polycystic ovaries, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, malignancy in the uterus, cervix and ovary.
In pregnancy, USG is helpful to diagnose fetal well being, dating scan, and anomaly scan which rule out defects in the fetus.
Sonography is very helpful in thyroid, testis and to evaluate muscle pathology. Evaluation of breast pathology is very crucial and easily detected on sonography.
Ultrasound waves are thought to be harmless and the test is usually performed externally on the skin surface. Sonography has no known risks when used externally on the surface of the skin.
Types of ultrasound scanning

Ultrasound is said to be safe and painless. Using sound waves it produces pictures of the inside of the body. With the help of a general ultrasound scan, we can diagnose the causes of pain, swelling, and infection in the body's internal organs and to examine a baby in pregnant women and infant's brain and hip. It's also used to help guide biopsies, diagnose heart conditions, and assess damage after a heart attack.

Obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of a baby (embryo or fetus) within a pregnant woman, as well as the mother's uterus and ovaries which are considered safe for mother and baby. It does not use ionizing radiation, has no known harmful effects, and is the preferred safe method for monitoring pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Gynecologic ultrasound is an imaging method. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an internal image of a woman’s bladder, uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix, and ovaries. Ultrasound images can be used in gynecologic care to detect and help in treating many diseases and conditions in the pelvic region.

Doppler is a special application of sonography which is helpful to rule out arterial disease or thrombosis/varicose in the arterial and venous system In upper and lower limbs.
Obstetrics Doppler is most useful to find out the cause of growth restriction and helpful for rule out intrauterine feto-placental or utero-placental insufficiency.
